To put it mildly, Felicity was terrified. As Edward rode, he allowed Felicity and James full access to his memories of his conversation with the air elements, and Felicity did the same for James and Edward. Felicity paced in front of the door to her uncles study impatiently.
I am getting dizzy just looking at you, James said as he stood from his seat. Sit. Pacing will not get them here faster.
How can you remain calm? Felicity asked as she ignored him and continued to pace, fingering her diamond necklace. That witch tortured elementals. Tortured! No wonder the leviathan is worried! No wonder the kraken is stirring! The kraken has never been known as a benevolent element, but I am quite sure it does not like to be tortured! Felicity would have continued on her rant while she paced, except an arm snaked around her middle and began to drag her to a chair. She uttered a squeak of protest, and then Jamess hand covered her mouth. He held her close to his side as her feet dragged on the ground. Felicity briefly had a mental picture of Anna carrying a kitten with one arm as the kittens bottom feet dragged on the floor and the front feet hung over the arm. That was how Felicity felt like.
Now. Can you sit down and be quiet? James asked as he released her from her kitten carrying position so she could look at him, but did not take his hand off of her mouth.
Felicity nodded reluctantly. James slowly lowered his hand and looked at her cautiously. Felicity glared at James as she sat down in the chair opposite of the door to her uncles study that James dragged her too. She took a deep breath and concentrated on observing the door to the study. It was a deep, rich red with gold patterns on it. Felicity never could make them out. Edward could always pick out a pattern or too and tell her what it was, but she could never make any sense of it. She always figured that it was because she was water and not fire. It never bothered her that she could not understand it and Edward could because he was air. It was nice to know that she could not do everything well. She did enjoy looking at it, however. It was a beautiful door. The door reflected whoever the head wizard in Laulao was. The shades of the different colors also reflected the personality of the wizard.
Thank you, James said as he sat down next to her, clearly thinking that Felicity was going to behave. He obviously had not listened to Edwards stories about her very closely. The moment he was settled in his chair, Felicity jumped up and began to pace again. I thought you were going to behave, James growled disapprovingly.
I never said I was, Felicity said grandly without breaking stride. You assumed that I was.
I forgot, James groaned. Water types are excellent at twisting things to their own advantage.
Felicity made a face at James and continued with her pacing. James did not attempt to put Felicity in a chair again. James thought as he watched Felicity pace. Something did not make sense with the meeting with the mermaids. Not only that, but the meeting with the salamander was also quite strange. James could not put his finger on it, but something did not seem right with those meetings. His musings were interrupted by Deborah running up to Felicity.
Here they are, Deborah said breathlessly as she, Edward, and Christopher ran up to her and James.
Are you ready? Edward asked Felicity as they held each others hands.
Ive been ready ever since he disappeared, Felicity said with a shaky smile as they faced the door.
Together, they spoke these words: Open for the friends of elementals, beloved ones of Rainford. The patterns on the door began to swirl and change and slither all over the dooreven Felicity could see that. They formed a seal in the middle of the door. Everyone could see the pattern on the door. It was a circle with a human in the middle. The human was male and was crowned with a wreath of flowers around his head, holding fire in his right hand and cupping water in his left hand; air was shown in swirling forms around his body. The gold never stopped swirling. It really looked like the wind was moving the humans clothes, and the water dripped down and the fire flickered. Then the door opened straight down the middle of the seal. Edward, Felicity, James, and Christopher entered reverently into Mastertodo Rainfords private study. The door closed softly behind them while Felicity gaped.
The room was painted in the colors of the four elementsred, grey, blue, and green. Bookshelves reached to the top of the ceiling and were overflowing with books and papers. To the right was a desk that was made of oak that had earth elementals carved into it. The entire desk was cleaned except for a single sheet of paper. To the far left of the room was a pool of water in the floor with a ring of stone from the gulf. Straight ahead in between books shelves was a narrow space with an open window that Felicity was sure she had never seen outside the castle. A roaring fire was behind the desk, and the carpet was a rich red. Everyone stared for a moment at the room, a little overwhelmed. It was Christopher who moved farther into the room first.
This is where father worked? he asked in awe.
Yes, he did, Edward said quietly. He moved towards the desk slowly, not sure if the room was an illusion or not. He walked around behind the desk to move the chair out of the way to observe the only piece of paper that was on the desk. It only has one word on it. Find.
Find, Felicity said slowly. I wonder what that means.
He told me about this! James exclaimed excitedly. Rainford often came to the Academy to teach a course or two, and he explained this to us. Sometimes, a wizard will leave a sheet of paper with a single word on it so he can leave a message behind. You see, he must have left a message with him speaking to the two of you so that he could be found. That is why he wrote the word find.
But how do we trigger it? Felicity asked.
The same way you and Edward opened up the door, James answered triumphantly.
Felicity and Edward looked at each other and shrugged. They took a deep breath. Find.
Nothing happened, Felicity pointed out unnecessarily.
Then not everyone who needs to say it said it, James answered testily. He knew he was right on this. He remembered the lesson so very clearly, because some of his other teachers had told him later that that practice was very outdated, and that many did not even know the spell for it any more. Try it with Christopher.
But he does not know that Christopher is alive, Felicity argued, impatient for results.
Perhaps he wanted the mother to be there as well, and it will work just as well if Christopher says it! James thundered. If you have any better ideas, please tell me princess.
Now, now children, Edward clucked. Calm down. Felicity and Christopher, on three we shall say find. One. Two. Three.
Find.
Nothing again.
This time just Felicity, James, and I, Edward said sensibly, before Felicity and James could bite each others heads off. One, two, three.
Find.
It certainly took you long enough, said a voice that sighed through the room.
Uncle Rainford? Felicity asked hesitantly.
Yes, it is me, the voice said answered with a chuckle. James was right about this note, but what I did not mention in my lecture was that when this spell is cast, the casters personality is ingrained in the paper. So, even though I am not Rainford, I have his memories and will tell you the important things he wanted you to know.
We are listening, Edward answered eagerly.
As I am sure you have long suspected, I have been kidnapped, Rainfords voice said tiredly. And, as I am also sure that you have suspected, it was due to my research. I was researching the Black Witch. Felicity, have you discovered that song yet in the hidden library?
Yes, Felicity answered eagerly.
That is not the full story.
That is what Thomas said, Edward cut in.
The elements have noticed? Oh dear. This is worse than I thought, the voice exclaimed. 'How many years has it been any way?'
Eight, Felicity answered.
Well, since we are talking now, I am assuming that the real Rainford has been able to hold them off, but not for long.
Who kidnapped you? Felicity demanded.
The voice was silent for a moment. The witch that was put to sleep did not leave this earth without giving birth to a son.
That does not bode well, James said tersely.
No, it does not; it is his descendant that has kidnapped me. Only a wizard from the Laulaon royal line can awaken the witch. And if she is awakened, there will be no stopping her this time.
Why not? James asked. We have wizards and elementals as before. We are strong.
Not like there were more than a thousand years ago, Rainfords voice said sadly. Besides Laulaons, people in other places of the continent do not respect the elementals like they should. They drive them out of their homes and hunting grounds. The elementals have grown weak. The wizards still respect the elementalsthey have tobut the wizards are relying more and more on new spells that require their power and their will to do things. It takes both elemental magic and a wizards will to take the Black Witch down. It would take time to teach the wizards again. Time you do not have.
What do we need to do? Edward asked.
There is a prophecy, the voice whispered. It is too dangerous to speak it out loud. You will find the prophecy in the book with gold writing. Felicity gasped with understanding. There is one more thing before this spell ends. I have a wife.
We know, Felicity said as tears began to well in her eyes.
Her name is Rose. Please, find her and keep her safe, Rainfords voice pleaded.
His voice is fading, Felicity cried.
The spell is almost finished, James explained. We will, Rainford.
Thank you, the voice whispered. All was silent for a moment while the paper disintegrated on the desk and the wind blew the dust away. Everyone stood in a stunned silence for a moment. Christopher moved over to the desk with a determined look on his face.
Father does not know about me, Christopher said slowly. I should go to help. If Father does not know that I am alive, and no one who took mother does, then they will not be expecting me! I can help!
Yes, you could, Felicity said slowly, planning already. Of course you will come with us. You will be a great help.
There is an us, Edward said as he pointed to James, Christopher, and himself, but no you. You are not coming.
Yes I am, Felicity growled. And you, Edward are not going.
Why not? he growled right back to Felicity as he came to stand in front of her.
Do not try to intimidate me by standing over me, Felicity hissed. You cannot go because you are too well known among the countries in the Continent. No one knows what I look like. That is reason number one. Reason number two is that because I do not leave Laulao, no one but Laulaons will know that I am missing. If someone invites you to their house for a month long stay and I say, I do not know where he is, that immediately looks suspicious because you and I are connected. If you stay here, you can run the country and deal with other royals. I can slip out of Laulao much more easily than you. No one from Laulao will tell any one who is not trusted that I have left our valleythis needs to be a secret. No one can know what we are doing.
Edward glared at Felicity. She was right. He did not want to admit it, but Felicity was right. If he went off questing, it would raise many questions about where he was going and what he was doing.
What would be your cover story?
James, Christopher, and I are siblings, looking for a new life. We have different mothers, but the same father. All of our mothers are dead, and father raised us.
Not bad, Edward said grudgingly. I am still not letting you go.
And neither am I, James added calmly. Felicity glared into his eyes that were black with fury. She was still not intimidated. She was too mad to be affected by his eyes. Felicity saw a red light around her feet. James wanted her to stay where she was.
No! Felicity erupted. You know that I am right! You must let me go!
she is right, a voice said with impeccable annunciation.
Nana! Felicity cried gratefully. Tell Edward that I am right!
Felicity is right.
Ha!
but not for her reasons alone.
Huh? Felicity asked as she looked at the fire salamander on her uncles desk.
you must look up the prophecy, Felicity. it is important to understand why you and not your brother must go on this quest. Prince James must go with Princess Felicity. as your journey progresses, the prophecy will become clearer. Princess Felicity, Prince James, and Duke Christopher will be the only ones on this quest. Prince Edwardyou have other duties here in Laulao that you must attend. just because you will not go out of Laulao, does not mean that your part is not as important.
With that said, Nana crawled off the desk and disappeared. Felicity looked triumphantly at Edward. Edward and James glared at Felicity, knowing that she had won and there was nothing they could do about it. One did not argue with a fire salamander of Nanas power.
I will be looking up that prophecy now, Felicity said as she swept out of the room. Her grand exit was marred by her tripping over her own feet. James had a glimpse of her cheeks become very red before she left the room.
I am going to go with her, Christopher said quickly as he left the room hurriedly.
Smart child, James said through clenched teeth. Is there no way to stop her?
No, Edward shook his head. And she is right. If I were to go missing, it would look suspicious. Word could get to the wrong people. Since Felicity does not leave the valley, no one would know she is missing, and she could move freely with the people. Laulaons would know, but like Felicity already said, they would not let that knowledge leave the valley. They know when gossip can spread and what needs to be kept a secret.
I do not like it, James said firmly. Nana showing up at that opportune time made James certain that something was not right. Felicitys anger should not be calling fire elements to her aid, powerful or not. Something was not right with her magic.
Neither do I, Edward admitted. James and Edward left the study in brooding silence.
Felicity rummaged through the library, searching for the book written with gold. She was in the library. Her library. It had been her safe haven even when she was a child. From her mother who could not understand Felicitys love for books and dislike of doing diplomatic things; from her father who loved her but wanted her to wear clothing that she hated; even from Edward and his tricks she would hide from sometimes. Felicity appreciated her solitude. It was not lonely her with her books who were her friends. When the door to the library was closed, everyone knew not to disturb her. Books were Felicitys refuge and hiding place when her parents had died. They had died when she and Edward were nine. No one knew how they died, and Felicity and Edward did not talk about it. In the rare moments that Felicity dwelt on that horrific night, she suspected something magical had killed them. Not the elementals however. They had loved her parents. Though her father had no magic and her mother had limited healing abilities, they strictly enforced laws that protected all elementals on their land. Charlotte and Madeline were grateful for this especially during the summer months and the fishing season. If someone was thrown overboard, a mermaid would always get them safely back to shore. Earth elemental attacks in the forest had ceased to exist, and they would often help the people in the forest towns find food. The weather was never too severe thanks to the air elementals, and raging forest fires never happened at all. Felicity and Edward kept this protection law as well. They loved their elemental friends, and though neither was close to any fire or earth elementals, they protected them just as fiercely from outsiders. Coming back to the present, Felicity knew the general area that the book would be, and she raced to it as fast as she was sure she would not trip.
Uncle Rainford has been leaving us clues all along. Why did I not see it before? Everything has been leading up to this moment, Felicity said out loud to her books as she began to go to the back of the library. Felicity did not allow any of the servants in the library, for she cleaned it herself and organized all of the books. The library was the biggest room in the castle. Shelves upon shelves were in neat rows. Felicity did not tell Edward yet, but they were going to need more. Books stood piled at ends of rows because there was no more room for them on the shelves. Felicity hopped, skipped, and jumped towards the back of the library where the more priceless books were. The rare books filled the entire back row reached all the way to the ceiling. Ladders were on the shelves to reach the very top. Felicity sighed in resignation. The book was all the way on the top of the bookshelf on the far right, like she suspected. She shrugged, pushed the ladder all the way to the end of the wall, and began to climb. She climbed quickly but carefully to reach the top. When Felicity was finally at the proper shelf, she began to scan the book titles.
There it is, Felicity whispered in awe. Poems of the Continent was just where she remembered it to be when Uncle Rainford had brought it down to show her when she was twelve. Uncle Rainford, and sometimes Edward, were the only people allowed in the library when the door was closed. Besides Edward, he was the only one in her family that let her be herselfplain, unadorned, book lover, archer, swimmer, and miniature wizard and healer. He even put a spell on the door when she was five that prevented anyone who would wish to disturb Felicitys peace of heart or mind could not come in. It was a very fickle spell. Sometimes Uncle Rainford could not come in because of it. Sometimes Edward could, but mostly no one dared to try the door. Felicity carefully pulled the book out from the shelf and held it close in her left hand as she began her descent. Going down from the top was always the worst part for Felicity. She took a deep breath as she paused to give her brain a moment to adjust. I am not going to be clumsy and fall to my death, she murmured to herself with a ghostly chuckle. She moved her foot and began to put it on the rung below.
What do you think you are doing! shouted a voice that Felicity recognized instantly and wished she didnt, especially as she began to fall. She closed her eyes tightly and waited for the impact, but instead felt herself floating down. She landed with a thud in Jamess arms. Felicity could not utter a sound. His eyes were blacker than the night sky with fury at her. You could have gotten yourself killed!
I would not have! You scared me which caused me to fall off! Put me down! Felicity hissed at him. James ignored her and began to carry her to the front of the library.
I am beginning to wonder how you survived to your twentieth birthday, James said with an even voice, though his eyes belied his emotions.
I am always careful whenever I go down the ladders, Felicity said piously. They had arrived at the front of the library where there was a fireplace that hosted a small fire with a two large chairs and an end table. The table hosted a candle, some paper, an inkwell, and a quill for writing down notes. A stained glass window with a picture of the four major elementals let it colored light and gave the library a comforting atmosphere. Will you please put me down?
Not until I am sure that you are uninjured, James said firmly. Actually, James just wanted to hold her for a bit longer. When he saw her on the ladder, clinging for her life it seemed, he became terrified. Perhaps he should not have yelled at her, for that was why she fell, but he was not going to admit it to her! Holding her in his arms made him feel that she was safer.
Now? Felicity asked sullenly.
Yes, James said as he set her down gently.
Edward did tell you that when the library door is closed that no one is allowed in here? Felicity asked sourly as she made her way to her chair. It was a deep blue that was very comfortable, and Felicity was still a little shaken from her fall.
No, he did not. There was a spell on it, but it did not seem to affect me.
Felicity stared at James with her mouth agape. The spell did not work? Felicity said the words very slowly. She could not look away from him, she was too much in shock.
That is what I said, James said, wondering why she was staring at him like he had just turned into a mermaid. Is that the book with the prophecy? he asked, trying to shut her mouth from its open position. It made him think of kissing her, which was certainly not the thought of a sane mind.
Yes, Felicity said, her mind sufficiently distracted from James again with the mystery the book presented. She curled into the chair as she began to look through the book. Uncle Rainford showed it to me once. He said that it was written with gold, but when I looked inside it was just ink. I now think me probably meant that the words inside of it were like gold, because they were so important.
A very likely explanation, James said as he sat in the opposite chair of Felicity. He waved his hand and a silver cone settled over the two of them. It made a circle around the two of them, and was very transparent. Felicity looked at him quizzically. It is a silence cone. No one will hear us discussing the prophecy.
Smart, Felicity muttered. She flipped through the pages of the book looking for the Fire and Water poem. When Felicity opened to the right page, a letter fell out. It is another single word on it. Understand.
Dear Felicity, Rainfords voice began. Felicity opened her mouth to begin to talk to the voice like the last time, but James held up his hand to stop her. The voice continued. I knew that you would eventually find this letter. I only hope that it is not too late. The poem that you see is actually a prophecy that has to do with our family. I cannot make out all of it yet, but if I should suddenly disappear, I want you to try and figure it out so that when the time comes, we will all be saved. I think that the water in this prophecy refers to you. Be safe. Love, Uncle Rainford. And the letter disappeared.
This must have been written before the one we just heard, James mused. Obviously an earlier spell that just said the words the caster wanted to say; no personality ingrained in the paper at all.
Well, Felicity sighed. Here is the poem.
When Fire and Water meet,
It will be to save us all
From the Nothing that hides
And the Nothing that sleeps.
Fire has great power.
Water has great power.
As Fire and Water leave,
Air stays to protect the world they hold so dear.
The barrier brakes.
Fire and Water merge.
Only combined do they triumph over Nothing.
That was as clear as mud, Felicity said discouragingly. She handed the book to James while she copied down the prophecy.
Quite the contrary, James said as he read through the poem again. I find it very insightful.
Please elaborate, Felicity said as she waved the paper in the air to make the ink dry faster.
Your uncle suspected that you are water. If you are, then who is fire?
Not Uncle Rainford, Felicity mused. Had he not been captured, I would say it was him. Christopher?
I would say so, James said eagerly. I now see why you must come. I do not have to like it, but as long as I am going as well, I should be able to keep you mostly out of harms way.
Thank you for the vote of confidence, Felicity said as she rolled her eyes.
James ignored her. Nothing that sleeps would refer to the Black Witch, and the Nothing that hides must be her descendent. If you and Christopher combine your powers to defeat the witch then that is what destroys her. See? Very easy.
But I do not have great power, Felicity said frustrated, still waving the piece of paper.
I need to teach Christopher how to control his talent any way, James said lightly. You shall join in the lessons. Perhaps you have some hidden magic that I cannot see currently. Edward is obviously Air. I suppose he is the back up plan in case something goes wrong.
Very wise, Felicity sighed, continuing to wave the paper. Why is the witch referred to as nothing?
James thought on that for a moment. I have read other stories on the Black Witch, and if legend is true, she does not use her own will and talent, nor elemental magic.
She uses black magic, Felicity said softly.
Yes. She uses Nothing, James said worriedly.
That is not good.
No it is not.
At least we agree on something. Has this ink dried yet? Felicity stopped waving the paper, but did not have a good grip on it as it floated to the ground. James knelt to the ground to get it as Felicity rose to retrieve it as well. Unfortunately, she became entangled in her skirt and fell once again on top of James. He fell over backwards to land on his back with Felicity on top of him. James stared at Felicity in surprise. His head was just showing beyond the chair he had recently occupied. His hands had caught her waist and now rested on her hips. Their faces were very close. Sorry? Felicity offered with a nervous laugh. She felt the silence cone break as they fell, and Felicity could feel the burst of energy in her bones.
James tried to breath through the mouse brown hair that was over his nose. We really have to stop doing this, James said as he pushed Felicitys hair out of his face and onto her back.
Oh my. James and Felicity looked up to see Marie standing over them with a shocked expression. I had no idea you two were
intimate. Alone and unchaperoned, and in the library! Who would have thought? When is the wedding?
This is not what it looks like, Felicity said firmly.
Then why are you still on top of James? Marie asked confusedly. Felicity scrambled to get off on James, but only succeeded in falling on top of him again. James stopped her struggling so he could get both of them up at once.
It was not what it looks like, James repeated as he straightened his clothes.
Then why are you still touching her? Marie asked, more confused then ever. James looked down to see his arm still around Felicitys waist. I cannot wait to tell Prince Edward! A marriage! Marie skipped off through the opened door to find Felicitys brother.
Did you forget to close the door? Felicity asked in a strangled voice. Her hand automatically reached for the diamond to play with it.
Yes, James said, quite ready to knock himself unconscious for the next thirty years.
I am never going to forgive you, Felicity said determinedly.
Do not worry. I do not think that I can forgive myself either, James said as he ran his fingers through his hair. He bent down to pick up the piece of paper that Felicity had dropped and handed it to her.
What is this I hear? Edward asked curiously as he entered the library. Marie tells me that the two of you are going to be married?
I was clumsy and fell on top of James, Felicity said, keeping her eyes to the floor. Marie came it and had the wrong, let us say, impression.
I see. Edward was trying very hard at the moment not to laugh at the situation. Well, I see it as a splendid opportunity.
Why. James had no patience for Edwards vague remarks at the moment. The idea of marrying Felicity was not sitting well with him. He was bachelor, and he wanted to stay that way for a little while yet.
Instead of the two of you being brother and sister, you could be a married couple with a son going through the countries, looking for work, Edward said since that was the first thing that popped into his head. He had no intention of telling them that he was hoping that this would happen. Even as he said it, it really was not that bad of a plan. Felicity would be safer traveling as a married woman anyway, and this gives James a perfect excuse to disappear for a while.
James and Felicity stared at Edward, then slowly turned to each other.
Annulment as soon as the quest is finished? Felicity asked.
Agreed. James said in total agreement.
We need to tell Maggie, Felicity said. How long do you need to train us?
At least a month. Preferably two. Why?
Because however long it takes to train us will be how long it will take Maggie to plan the wedding. We can leave right after that, Felicity said resigned. I shall go and tell her.
Before you leave, Edward said as he grabbed his twins elbow. You both need to make an announcement about this by the end of the day. And when you do and when you are seen together, you must look as if you want this.
Why? James and Felicity asked together.
Felicity, you know more than anyone else that no one in Laulao marries for anything less than love, Edward said with a smile. Keep up the pretense, and no one in Laulao will suspect a thing. We may not even need to tell them about your little outing.
Very well, Felicity sighed. May I go now?
Yes, Edward said as he hugged his sister and kissed her brow. Felicity walked out the door, but then raced back to straighten Edwards clothes and brush crumbs off of his shirt. She smiled genuinely at him, kissed him on the cheek, and raced out of the library. So you are going to marry my sister.
Against my will, James said firmly. She is not what I want in a wife at all. She is two heads shorter than I, must always argue with me, and constantly gets me into trouble with her clumsiness!
Sometimes, what we are not looking for is what we need, Edward grinned as he left the library. I shall see you later. Brother.
James stood in the library for a long time trying to convince himself that Edward was wrong.
