The Lady- Ch 12
"Are you alright commander?" a soldier asked nervously.
"Fine," Irvin snapped. "Focus. We attack in an hour."
"Yes," the soldier squeaked out as he tripped on his way away from Irvin.
Irvin knew he wasn't feeling like himself; the entire war band was giving him a wide berth today. They knew something was eating at him, but also knew the value of their lives. Irvin still wanted someone to come over to ask what was wrong, if only to yell at someone. He heard a noise behind him and turned around to see what it was; he recognized two of his men. They didn't notice him and they continued with their conversation.
"Do you know what's wrong with the commander?" the younger soldier asked with trepidation.
"I don't know," the older one shrugged. "He's meaner than a bear woken up in the middle of his winter sleep."
Irvin personally thought he had been acting worse as they moved away from him. He couldn't seem

"It has been a month," Brenna said to Irvin during their strategy lesson. "Why haven't they advanced yet? Our whole plan hinges on them moving first."
"Are you sure you learned everything from the elders of the war band?" Catriona jabbed at Irvin, who only smiled widely at her.
"There are only two reasons as to why he would wait. The duke might be waiting for you to come to him because you have seen his army and you want to make amends to him."
"As if I would ever marry that swine," Brenna hissed.
"The other reason is to make us more nervous," Irvin continued like he was never interrupted. "He has seen us bring in the harvest and knows that we are ready for a siege. We got in the crops extremely quickly," Irvin said, clearly still puzzled over how it happened. "However, the element of surprise is still ours. He does not know that we have almost as many men as he has. He has only seen the women and c

"Vera!" Gair yelled as he ran towards the four year old and grabbed her by the waist. "Where do you think you are going?"
"To see the pretty horses," she said with a smile that Gair was certain that one day would make men grovel at her feet.
"Did I say that you could see them without me?" he asked sternly. After a month Gair had learned that when dealing with Vera, one could not look her in the eyes. Otherwise, a person would give in when they looked into the wide eyed innocence there, even when someone knew better.
"Not exactly," she said sweetly.
"That is not the correct," Gair said with a much harsher voice. "I told you that you could not go because it is wet today and I did not want you to get hurt. Because you disobeyed me, we must go inside now and you must stay in your room." Gair could see Vera beginning to well up for a mighty cry. He was more than willing to brave the looks of scorn to take her to he

Gair took a long drink from the fresh stream that he had come across in the woods. He had been avoiding Roman patrols for months now. It was easy to keep out of sight. The Romans did not know the woods like Gair did. It was frightening to Gair how easy it was for him to assimilate to a forest life. He was able to feed on a regular basis and find places to sleep at night. It was rough, but he was alive and out of the Roman's hands. The problem was that they were like sand on a beach. The Romans were everywhere! No matter where Gair went in a village, they were there and on the watch for him. It was maddening. Was this how Catriona felt, away from her family? It had only been months for Gair; she had been away for years. Gair felt so very alone. He was not getting enough deep sleep at nights so he did not even see Brenna any more.

Brenna's head was swimming with information that Irvin had given her. It had been three hours since he had first come in, and he immediately began telling her strategies of warfare, strategies for the laird or lady, what preparations should be made, and his own history. "So some people in the village ran and got you when they heard my announcement?"
"Yes, your ladyship. We already have regular patrols in the forest, and you having everyone collection food is a good idea as well. You laid the basic foundation for war preparations already without me even telling ye." Irvin beamed at her like a proud father.
"It is so close to summer though. The crops are not going to be ready for months yet, and we are going to need that food for the winter."
"Is it too late to plant seeds?"
"It is a bit late, but seeds could still be planted," Brenna responded in confusion.
"Is there a place where you could plant the seeds within the wall

Brenna gave into the rare pleasure of putting her face in her hands and sighed a sigh that could shake the world. It had been three days since the funeral procession to lower her father into ground next to his ancestors. Brenna had spent the past several days accepting condolences and presents from the villagers whom she suspected were secretly celebrating her father's death-not that she blamed them-and responding to letters from various dukes, lairds, duchesses, and other various noblemen and women conducting the proper social requirements without any heart behind them. She had barely had any sleep for the past couple days, and only Catriona and William were able to force anything down her throat that resembled food. Brenna was very glad that she had cried beforehand because she wouldn't have been able hold it together the past days.
"Lady Brenna?" Catriona asked as she came into the study. "Rhian and his mother are here to see yo

Brenna woke up and stretched luxuriously. "Gair," she whispered. She knew his name after all of his years. It was almost too good to be true for him to be real flesh and blood. She opened one eye and saw that it was nearly night again. Brenna supposed she should get up, so she did reluctantly and found a dress that was simple enough for her to put on without Catriona's help. With only a little trouble Brenna managed to put it on without calling for assistance. She observed herself with minor criticism in her small looking glass and was at a loss to know what to do with her hair, so she decided to just leave it down. Her hair fell in soft waves around her shoulders and reached down her back. Brenna didn't know it, but there was a kinder light in her eye, a happier look; her mouth was curved with a hint of a smile. All Brenna knew was that her heart was truly happy for the first

"Nothing has been seen. Do not worry. No Campbells or Romans have been seen," Gair said as he tried to disentangle himself from Fiona. "The festival is tonight, and we are all read. Just keep calm. I will be doing scouting duty tonight I'll be in the front line."
"You might be hurt," Fiona gasped, wide eyed.
"I will be just fine. Now I must see about preparations for tonight. Have a wonderful time tonight Fiona." Gair felt like a rabbit being hunted by a fox as he ran for what seemed to be his life. It seemed the longer he went without any rumors or obvious women who were being courted, the more the women of his clan seemed to throw themselves at them. Before he could get inside he felt a hand on his arm. "I am going to bed and you will be perfectly protected tonight please let me go to bed so I can sleep for tonight!"
"There is no need to use that tone of voice with
